Coonoor  is the second largest hill station located in the Nilgiri hills, Coonoor is located in the western part of Tamil Nadu, India’s southern region, at the head of the Hulikal ravine (1850 m above sea level). It is easily accessible from Ooty (19 km). 

Coonoor is famous for its verdant environs and for a variety of wildflowers and birds, Coonoor provides the traveller with the panoramic view of the lush green Nilgiri hills, with its ravines, valleys, and waterfalls, 

Coonoor provides a perfect setting for activities like trekking and hiking, Coonoor  is also famous for its tea plantations and festivals. you can take a walk through the tea gardens .  

you can enjoy the exhilarating and unique ride on the toy train that connects Coonoor with Mettupalayam and Ooty, The trip provides some breathtaking views of the Nilgiri hills in all its natural glory. 

HISTORY OF COONOOR : 

Coonoor was a sparsely populated hilly area inhabited mostly by local Toda tribe for centuries . It formed part of the kingdom of Mysore, until the British defeated ruler Tipu Sultan in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war in 1799 and gained control of it. 

History of Coonoor begins with the footsteps of British rulers only as they were great fond of natural beauty and stunning picturesque, John Sullivan was the first person who had made the world known of this astonishing wonder!! 

In 1819, John Sullivan visited this mystical and magical hill station for about three weeks and he liked the place so much that he made his home made of stone in Ooty, just near to Coonoor. 

Then, in the time period 1820-1827, he impressed the leading directors of East India Company with the opulence of the place. He finally convinced them to build a hospital at this place for the ills from European troops. 

As soon as it happened, they has started taking good care of the hill station and put great efforts to develop it in a marvelous destination and it is quite evident from the origin of The Blue Mountain Railway. 

 Though the foundation of the Nilgiri Railway track was done in 1897 but it did not implemented successfully. Later on, in 1981, it again started and then got finalization in 1984. 

And today, toy train is one of the most attracting parts of tourism in Coonoor.Tea plantation industry also owes gratitude to them as it was also an outcome of their efforts only. 

The end of the 19th century, viable tea plantations had been established on about 3,000 acres of land around Coonoor,  A social club for the planters, the Coonoor Club had also been built and still functions as such today.  

Best Time To Visit Coonoor : 

Coonoor  brings out a different side  in every season , best time to visit Coonoor is between October and March, During this time, Coonoor weather is chilly, and if you are fond of the cold climate, this is your place. 

Summer  receive massive crowds to get a respite from the heat, Indulge in outdoor activities during this season for a memorable holiday. It experiences southwestern monsoon rains in July and September.

Coonoor also receives rain from the southwest monsoon, from June to September, but not quite as much. December to February is the dry winter season.

How To Reach Coonoor : 

 

By Air : - Coonoor does not have an airport of its own, The nearest airport is in Coimbatore (70 km).

By Train :-  Coonoor is on the toy-train line, The major railway is Mettupalayam (28 km) from Coonoor ,Between mettupalayam to Ooty  the Nilgiri Mountain Railway.

By Bus : -  Coonoor is well connected by good roads,There is a regular bus service available from  all the  major Cities.
