La Salette Church, Kodaikanal Overview :

Mother Salette church is located in kodaikanal in dindigil district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu,Mother Salette church is one of the oldest churches Built-in shades of white and blue, about 133 years old It is an amalgam of French and Tamil styles of architecture.

The shrine is situated on a mountain which is 7,000 feet above the sea level.It was constructed by Father St. Cyr who was cured of sickness with the blessings of Mother Saleth.

This inspired him to build it is a common belief that its foundation was laid in 1863.The statue of Our Lady of La Salette is present inside this exquisite church giving the pilgrims its blessings with a serene poise.

The church beautifully exhibits the excellent Tamil French architecture. The interior of the shrine is worth looking at since it is adorned with graceful statues of Our Lady of La Salette above the altar along with a statue of St. Joseph.

Both these statues were gifted to the church by a French Bishop Grenoble Diocese Most noteworthy architectural highlights to catch your breath instantly would have to be the exquisite paintings that were painted by a French noblewoman called Madame Coile. These paintings can be seen embellishing the windows of the church. 

History Behind La Salette Church :

La Salette Church dates back to 1863 when its cornerstone was laid by a French Missionary who believed in the philosophy of La Salette. The funding for the construction of this church came from a Belgian lady who donated benevolently after her daughter was cured of a disease. After almost 3 years of building the shrine, in 1866, the church was dedicated to Our Lady of La Salette (believed to be an apparition of Mother Mary) on Easter Sunday.

Architecture of La Salette Church :

French influence in the establishment of this church and also a hint of the local architectural style of Tamil Nadu, La Salette Church sports Tamil-French architecture. Apart from the main shrine which houses a statue of Our Lady of La Salette and another of Saint Joseph (the earthly parents of Jesus), the premise has a Pilgrim Hall, La Salette Grotto and Way of the Cross. The entrance has an arch that welcomes all. 

La Salette Church Mass Schedule : 

La Salette Church is accessible to all to enter the shrine, and people of any religion can walk in. In tune with most other Catholic churches, La Salette Church hosts the Sunday mass every Sunday morning at 8 AM, and again at 10:30 AM.

If Sunday is not convenient for you, you can take a look at the rituals even on Saturday evenings at 4 PM. For those who are well versed in Tamil, the daily mass is held in Tamil at 11:30 AM every day of the week.

Every year on 14th and 15th August, a grand celebration takes place in the church. A nine-day festival is celebrated in the church every year attracts worshippers from South India irrespective of their creed, caste or religion. 

The primary purpose of this festival is to carry out extraordinary service and a special procession. The spirituality that one experiences in the churches of Kodaikanal
