Kodaikanal Princess of Hill stations’,  is a charming hill station in Kodaikanal Lake or kodai lake is located in kodaikanal in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, India.

Kodaikanal Lake or kodai lake  :

Kodaikanal Lake or Kodai Lake Situated at Kodaikanal city the Kodaikanal Lake is an artificial lake and is also called Kodai Lake by the locals,Kodaikanal Lake is a picturesque star-shaped artificial lake at height of 2285m above sea level and has a normal depth of 3.0m. ,Spread across an area of 60 acres along with being surrounded by fine tarred road of 5 Kms length, the outflow from the Kodai Lake has given birth to a 180-feet tall waterfall called Silver Cascade, 

History of Kodaikanal Lake or kodai lake  : 

District collector of Madurai Sir Vere Hendry Levinge resided in Kodaikanal after his retirement in 1863. He was the man of asset and innovative thoughts for this lake and went through his cash to change over the marshy land by damming three streams streaming into a valley into a delightful lake. 



He supplied the lake with local fish, and the first boat for the Kodai Lake was purchased from the Tuticorin. It is said that foreign inhabitants used to swim in this very lake. The lake was created as the core of Kodaikanal when the British and early preachers were building up the town itself from the USA. 

Activities To Do In Kodaikanal : 

There are several activities that you can enjoy while you are visiting Kodaikanal Lake some of them are: 

1. Boating: You should enjoy boating at the lake as there are several options available to choose.There are normal boats as well as luxury boats and you can go for any one of your choice or budget. 

2. Flower show: It is one of the best parts of this lake. You are taken within the lake and can ponder upon beautiful flowers of the lake. During summer, the flowers are organised chiefly along with interesting beauty peasant show. 

3. Fishing: It is another activity that can be tried and enjoyed at the lake. The lake is home to many local fish 

4. Activities: The roads around the lake also have the activities of horse riding and cycling which you can enjoy. 

5. Swimming: There are boat clubs formed which after certain enrollment or membership allows you to swim in Kodai lake.

The Kodaikanal Lake offers a memorable boating experience

Kodaikanal Boat Club was framed in 1890.There are three types of boating available, Boathouse, boat club and boat services.boats are provided by Tamil Nadu Tourist Development Corporation and Kodaikanal Boat & Rowing Club. In view of boating cost for the tourists, it will vary from ₹100 to ₹1000 based on the type of boat, distance and timing. Luxury boats are also available you can choose that if you want.

Kurinji Flower (Flora) at Kodai Lake :  

Kurunji (Strobilanthes kunthiana),  is a unique flower which adds on to the charm of Kodaikanal. It is said that this blue bell-shaped flower booms once in 12 years. It bloomed last in 2004 and it is expected to blossom in 2016 next. 

These can be seen in the area around lake,the best time to visit Kodai Lake would be in the early morning or just around sunset.Hill-plantain fruits and plums are famous in the area.Flower Shows are regular feature in the summer season which attracts tourists. 

Fishing In Kodaikanal Lake : 

Fishing are permitted for members of the Kodaikanal Boat Club in the lake, which is commonly not the case in other lakes.This can be done after getting permission from Inspector of -Fisheries. 

Activities: Horse riding and Cycling along the road of the lake which will give you a different feeling.In fact just walking around the lake is also quite soothing when cool breeze caress you as you spend some time amidst its beauty.Children will be extremely happy to enjoy the pony rides or just play around on the lush banks. 

Swimming: Kodaikanal Lake boat clubs formed which after certain enrollment or membership allows you to swim in Kodai lake. 

Best Time To Visit Kodaikanal Lake  :  Kodaikanal Lake Best time to visit during summer which is anytime between April to June.and from September to October.  During this period you will be able to enjoy the pleasant breeze and several activities.

By Air : The nearest airports to Kodaikanal are Trichy, Madurai and Coimbatore 

By Road : State and private buses operate on regular basis from Chennai, Pondicherry, Trichy, Madurai, Dindigul, Palani and Coimbatore to Kodaikanal. 

By Rail : The Kodai Road Railway Station and the Palani Railway station at 64 km are the nearest railheads at a distance of 80 km and 64 km respectively.
