Shevaroy Hills or Servarayan Hills Yercaud|Servarayan Hills Yercaud 

 

Yercaud is a hill station in Salem, district of Tamil Nadu, South India.At a height of 4,970 feet on the Shevaroy Hills of the Eastern Ghats. Also called the “Jewel of the South”,Yercaud is Popular called as the “Poor man’s Ooty”. 

Servarayan hills is located in yercaud at the height of 1620 m above sea-level spread over 400 sq km of area with both plateaus and Servarayans hills .Also home to the highest peak and vantage point in the southern part of the Eastern Ghats which is called Solaikaradu peak. 

The local Tamil name Servarayan which is derived from a local deity, Servarayan, which means the Chera king. The term Selvarayan in Tamil means, 'the beautiful one'. 

It is nestled parallel to the lower Chitteri hills - Kalrayan hills, just north of the Kolli Hills and Pachaimalai Hills. Westwards, lie the Mettur hills. This range forms an important link in the southern part of Eastern Ghats hill chain. 

The major attractions in servarayan Hills have numerous antique coffee plantations and a sanatorium.the Shevaroy Hills are Orchidarium administered by the Botanical Survey of India,Shevaroy Hills offer good opportunity for trekking and cycling. 

The original forests still exist in the Shevaroy hills and those in higher slopes and peaks contain several endemic species of plants and fauna.For example, the Strobilanthes kunthiana (Neelakurinji) is found in the peaks of Shevaroy Hills, which apart from the higher altitudes of the Western Ghats is not known to be found in the Eastern Ghats. 

On top of the hill there is a cave temple with a modern facade dedicated to the local deity Lord Shervarayan and his wife Goddess Kaveri.Thousands of tribals take part in the colourful annual festival in the month of May. 

Apart from natural forests, there is an abundance of citrus fruits along with bananas, peas and jackfruits.And Various types of animal species are also found here in the Shevaroy Hills like the gaur, sambar deer, spotted deer, Indian pangolin, jackals, civets, hares, jackals and many reptiles among others. 

Shevaroy hills experiences pleasant weather throughout the year.The temperature varies somewhere between 13°C to 25°C, which makes it an ideal destination. 

Best time to visit to visit Shevaroy hills Yercaud : Throughout the year from the month of October to the month of June.Summer season is from March to June .
