Kumbakkarai Falls is well known falls in the foothills of the Kodaikanal Hills.Kumbakkarai Falls is located at Dindigul district, 9 kilometers from Periyakulam. Kumbakkarai Falls are located along the Kodai-Vellagavi-Periyakulam oothills of the Kodaikanal Hills.

History of Kumbakkarai Falls :

Kumbakkarai Falls has a very interesting history,At first this area was an open wilderness with only shrubs and rocks on this place ,The first initiative to turn into a tourist spot was taken by Thiru K. Chellum Iyer,

In 1942, Chellum Iyer from Periyakulam, who is a hotel businessman, thought of making the waterfalls open for the public.He wanted to develop the Kumbakarai waterfalls similar to the Courtallam and then asked permission from the British Government and, they approved.

After that, Chellum Iyer, single-handedly rebuild the area into a thriving tourist spot. He started with the construction of making steps,bathing spots and dressing rooms,and much more in the falls with his own money.

Finally, Today the area has flourished into one of the most visited Falls in the area. The statue of Murugan that can be found in the vicinity was sponsored by Thiru K. Chellum Iyer as well.There is a stone with an inscription detailing his contributing and expressing the gratitude of the locals to Mr Iyer,

The people of Kumbakkarai glorify his name even today.Now, Kumbakarai falls maintained by the Kodaikanal Forest Department.

Watersource For Kumbakkarai Falls :

The water of this waterfall originates in the Kodaikanal Hill In the first place, the water forms from Kodaikanal Town Reservoirs lake. The exceeding water from Kodai Town reservoir will form the river and first covers the tourist attention as Fairy Falls. 

And then it continues its flow and reaches another tourists attraction place at Liril Falls. Furthermore, it travels inside the jungle and gives a gorgeous look as a Vattakanal Waterfalls at the way of Dolphin Nose Point.Finally, waterfalls travel for 4 miles to arrive at Kumbakarai Waterfalls via the Vellagavi forest area. 

Kumbakkarai waterfall flows down in 50 feet in height in two stages before it hits the foothills. In the first stage,the water collects at the rock boulders and recesses.In the second stage, it falls down the layer of rocks. These recesses are named after wild animals like tiger, snake, elephant, cheetah etc. 

The water is available for the whole year,The water density is low during summer days and rich during the winter days. The source of water comes from Western Ghats.Tourists are also allowed to bathe in the waters of the Kumbakkarai Falls. The crystal-clear water of the Falls is enriched with natural minerals and herbs which has incredibly therapeutic benefits as well. 

Herbal Forest Of Kumbakarai Falls :

Kumbakarai water falls,The water while flowing from the Herbal Forest. It spreads almost 5 hectares and home to hundreds of herbal trees.It gathers a large number of minerals and herbs, which enrich the water and make it soothing with therapeutic qualities.

This is an additional benefit and unique feature for the visitors who come to bathe in this waterfall. The water is said to be beneficial for skin problems like allergies and ageing. 

Kumbakarai Falls Live Today :

If the rains flow is high in Kodaikanal, the falls have more water flow. If it rains at 1 PM in Kodaikanal that water will reach the Kumbakarai falls at 2PM through the Herbal Forest. In Summer times, the water force is average and based upon the rain in Kodaikanal. The waterfall will be open all day except the day when the water forces and lever higher. Those happen rarely. 

Restrictions In Kumbakkarai Waterfalls : 

To keep the waterfall safe, and pollution-free, there are few restrictions when you go to the Kumbakarai falls.One shouldn’t go to the restricted forest area.No Soap or Shampoo allowed in the falls while bathing since they’re harmful to animals.

They recommended wearing 3/4th or lower pants while bathing for adult men. 

As like in all tourist places, smoking is smoking restricted, Washing clothes after bathing also not recommended.Dressing, Rest Rooms are availabe In Kumbakarai Falls 

Safety in Kumbakarai Falls : 

Tamil Nadu Forest Department Forest officers always roam there, around the waterfalls throughout the day for your safety. It is a very safe place for the family and ladies, as well as the forest officers who always have an eye on you. Together with that, the crowd on peak days also high. So, you’re not alone with the animals,keep follow the instructions given from the forest department. 

Visitor's Facility In Kumbakarai Falls : 

There are restrooms and washrooms for the visitors who come to Kumbakarai Waterfalls. There is an adjoining section dedicated to food stalls that sell refreshments for guests to enjoy during their visit. Guides, cars for hire and locals are also available for help. 

Best Time To Visit Kumbakkarai Falls : Summer is the best time to visit the Kumbakarai falls at the month of  March to May,the water force is high. In Monsoon and winter seasons, you’ll already feel the chillness around you this won’t give you extra satisfaction. 

Kumbakkarai Falls Timings : Monday to Sunday (8:00 am – 4:00 pm) 

Kumbakkarai Falls Entry fee : INR 10 for children and INR 15 for adults. 

Kumbakkarai Falls Location : Kumbakarai Road, Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu 624101. 

Kumbakkarai Falls Parking Fee : ₹15 for bike and ₹50 for Car, ₹100 for buses. 

How To Reach Kumbakkarai Falls : 

By Road : From the Kodaikanal Bus Stand is easy and convenient if you are planning to take a bus. The distance from Kodaikanal Bus Stand and Kumbakkarai Falls is 76.8 km by road.  It takes approximately 2 hours to reach the foothills of the waterfall while travelling by bus via Laws Ghat Road. 

By Train : Nearest Railway Station- Kodai Road  Junction. 

By Air : Nearest Airport : Madurai.
