Guna Caves is situated In Kodaikanal hill town Palani hill range in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, South India, Guna Caves have been formed at an altitude of 2230 metres,It was first discovered by a British officer, BS Ward in 1821. 

Guna Caves  Kodaikanal Name Meaning : 

The caves derived their present name from the popular Tamil movie Guna starring Kamal Haasan, which was shot here in 1992,Prior to that, the caves were called the Devil's Kitchen--another strange name.

As per Hindu mythology, the Pandavas from  the epic Mahabharata have also stayed at this place cooked their meals in this cave and therefore the word "kitchen."However, there's no explanation for how the word "Devil " came about.

Guna Caves  Kodaikanal  History : 



In 1821, An American B.S Ward initially found this place initially.first the named as pillar Rocks because the rocks protude from the face of the cliff so they named Pillar-Shaped Rocks.

Later on The shola trees and lush green grasses cover the cliffs,the shola trees (old trees) spread roots on it it was added impression to the tourists to visit this place on that time,

The peoples have believed that the Pandavas were lived here and used this place as a Kitchen.

Later on, this place called Devil’s Kitchen,In the early 1900s, there are few trekkers and hikers used to go into the deep of the cave, its 3 Pillar-type Rocks,Anyone wishing to enter the caves should grab two rocks and lower themselves into the vertical path formed by the third rock.In the late 1970s the inside of the caves was well photographed.

In 1991, Kamal Hassan starring Guna movie developed in the Devils’ Kitchen,After the film went blockbuster, people started visiting the place and from time to time they call this place Guna Caves.

As  effect of this, few tourists tried to enter the caves and failed to make it. So far, we’ve lost almost 16 bodies in this cave. With this in mind, The narrow ravines inside the caves are now closed to the public the govt made an iron fence afar from the actual cave.



Now tourists can view the place afar.

Guna Caves Kodaikanal  Accident :

Still few believe that there is a devil inside the Guna Caves and that make people die In  the year 2012, A 21-year-old adult slipped into the caves and, he’s no more now. The fire service and police department took action to rescue the body but end up with no positive. Similarly, there are almost 16 known people who slipped and, they couldn’t make it. 

To do in Guna Caves Kodaikanal : 

it’s advisable to first enjoy the place, Gnarled Shola trees root and fresh air out there. Enjoy the visuals in the eyes first and then take photos,Tourists need to walk for about 400 meters 10 minutes from the main entrance to reach the cave and hill top and it is a great location for photography.

On the other hand, it is advisable to sit back and relax peacefully by watching the people around you,we strongly advise you to take a visit afar enjoy it and come back with memories.

Best time to visit Guna Caves Kodaikanal (Devil’s Kitchen) :

From April to June when the skies are clear. and then August – September. This is when the weather is at its best,. It is advisable not to visit the place from October to March since during this time the weather remains wet and cold.

The distance between Guna Caves and Kodaikanal Bus Stand is 8.5 km and the best way is to rent a private taxi on a daily basis to explore the sightseeing places in Kodaikanal.
