Thalaiyar Falls / Rat Tail Falls Kodaikanal History :

Thalaiyar Falls are 'Rat Tail Falls' one of the most popular tourist spots in Kodiakanal,Thalaiyar Waterfalls resides in Devadanapatti Village,Palani Hill ranges  in the Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu,India 

Thailayar Falls Falling from a height of about 297m the waterfalls are the highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu, and the third highest waterfall in India. in the worldwide rank of 267.On a clear day, There is a view tower in the park at the Dum Dum Rock, from where you can get a beautiful view of the falls and the Manjalar Dam.

The river water coming to the falls is from Perumal Malai village, through a 9 km downstream and is said to be clear. On the contrary, it may be polluted, and hence, visitors to the area are advised to avoid drinking it.

On a bright day, the falls is visible from the Dum Dum Rock viewpoint on the Batalugundu-Kodaikanal Ghat Road; where it appears like a white long and narrow strip of water on a background of the black rock cliff face. According to legends, Lord Muruga used to visit this rock on his way to the Palani Hills.

Structure of Thalaiyar falls :

At the top of the falls, at the very edge of the cliff, is a low concentrated wall on either side, tapering the flow of water into a rat tail shape. One can walk along the wall and get to the center of the falls. Right below one of the walls, is a large flat rock, about five ft wide.

If one gets down to the edge of this stone, they can directly see a little river at the bottom flowing through the forest. On the side, one can enjoy the calm of the silent waterfall.The falls also serves as a watering hole, attracting many animals for drinking water. Even though it is said that the water of Thalaiyar Falls,tourists visiting the falls are recommended not to drink it.



Rat Tail falls :

The falls got the name of a Rat tail falls because it can be spotted as a silver line from a long distance on the way.This falls is considered inaccessible to the general public, as there is no access road to it. However, one can reach these falls with 6 kms trekking after 34 Kms of road journey on ghat road from kodaikanal.It is possible for tourists to walk along the wall of the falls and reach the centre of the falls to enjoy them better.

The trek duration is around 2-3 hours one way. The trek is considered to be of moderate difficulty.The very edge at the top of the falls has a concrete wall. One can walk along the wall and get near the center of the falls. The water here is considered polluted and it's better to avoid bathing here.

For lovers of adventure and hiking, the peak of the falls makes for a worth hiking destination. However, if going for trekking, one needs to be highly cautious. In dry season, it is mush feasible to hike on foot which begins at the Manjalar Dam.

Hiking at Thalaiyar Falls - Hiker’s paradise :

Hiking is amongst the most popular adventurous activities you can do at Thalaiyar Falls. However, it is only allowed at the bottom of the falls,Hikers start their trek at Manjalar Dam,  and that too only during the summers and winters (the dry seasons).

as there have been accidents when hiking to the top part of the falls. path through the Mango orchards and potato fields around the Manjalar Reservoir and then goes up along the watercourse till the small shrine of Goddess Kamakshi.

There is a stream and hikers have to follow it to cross huge rocks till they arrive at the fall’s basin. The hiking trail spans 15 kilometers in total and can prove to be challenging if one is not fit. Its a full day hike.

Moonkilanai Kamakshi Temple:

Moonkilanai Kamakshi temple is situated in Amma Machi which is 3 km away from the Devadanapatti. This temple usually well-crowded on Aadi 18 (Tamil festival) and new moon days. Since Moonkilanai Kamakshi temple is believed as an effective temple, drinking, smoking activities are not allowed.

Best time to visit Thalaiyar Falls / Rat Tail Falls Kodaikanal  : 

The best time to visit Thalaiyar Falls is from October to March, during the winter and early months of spring, and then, between July and early September during the monsoon season,From October to March, Kodaikanal experiences the onset of winter, followed by the cold months and early spring.

During this time, the water levels of Thalaiyar Falls enjoyable, in addition to the weather being very favourable to pay a visit to this majestic attraction.March onwards, until the beginning of July, the summer season sets in the region. The water during this time starts reducing.

On harsher days, when the temperatures soar over 40 degrees Celsius, the water in the falls is as good as nil. So, it is best to avoid visiting the falls during this time of the year.

Bus : Kodaikanal Bus Stand and Thalaiyar Falls is around 20 kilometres, which will usually take you somewhere around 48 to 60 minutes to cover the entire distance,The best way to reach Thalaiyar Falls from Kodaikanal Bus Stand is to either rent a private car or hire a taxi, which is also the fastest alternative.

Madurai is the nearest railhead as well has an airport. 

Parking Facility: Parking facilities are available for visitors and are devoid of any charges.
