Berijam Lake is a reservoir near Kodaikanal town in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, South India,Located about 23 km away from the Kodai bus stand, Berijam Lake is one the most popular tourist spots in Kodaikanal.Berijam Lake Sprawled over a vast area of 59 acres, the calm waters of the Berijam Lake is so pure that it serves as the main source of potable water for Periyakulam - a small town in the valley that lies below Kodaikanal. 

History of Bejiram Lake :

Berijam Lake is a natural reservoir in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. It is located at the upper Palani hills and is close to the old site of Fort Hamilton. It is a man-made lake created after the construction of a dam for a micro-watershed development project.In 1864, Colonel Hamilton submitted a report stating that the Berijam Lake area was the best site in the Palani Hills for a military cantonment or Sanatorium. 

A military outpost later built here, Fort Hamilton, was named after him Berijam lake was created in 1867, when Collector of Madurai, donated part of his personal retirement funds for building the dam.Subsequently, the dam and reservoir were enlarged and a pipeline was built to supply drinking water to the Periyakulam Municipality. 

However, it was closed for a public visit for a very long time. In the year 1990, it was again opened for public tours, but there was a limitation on the number of tourists entering into the lake.However, one requires a forest pass for entering the area. You can easily get the passes from District Forest Office which provides free passes to the tourists.The lake with its refreshing setting and lush greenery around makes for an amazing picnic spot. Reaching the lake is not a difficult task as it is connected by a well-tarred road. 



Flora and Fauna at Berijam Lake : The sparkling blue waters of this attraction makes for a tranquil spot for nature lovers Berijam Lake is a flourishing ecological hotspot that hosts many species of animals, birds, plants and fish. Rich in its flora and fauna, the Berijam Lake is a popular picnic spot amongst locals If interested in fishing, one can indulge in the activity after seeking fishing permission from the Fisheries Department.

Apart from all this,One can spot fauna like bison, leopard,Indian Elephant, Nilgiri Langur and Deer,around the lake.The area around lake which is Upper Palani Shola forest reserve is consisted of wide variety of avian creatures such as Crested Serpent Eagles, Pariah Kites, pale-rumped Swallows and the Edible-nest Swiftlets.

One can also spot migratory birds like the Common Rosefinch, the Blue Chat, Leaf-warblers and Blyth's Reed-warbler. One can also spot free floating insectivorous bladderwort plant called utricularia australis.Boating has been banned in the lake to preserve the natural freshwater.The main reason for banning boating in the lake is that the water from the lake is used as drinking water for a nearby town.

The lake is situated inside a forest where permit is required to go in. You have to Reach Moir point which is the entrance to the reserve forest at 9 am to get permission for your own vehicle to the Lake. Permission is limited to first 25 vehicles. Usually, the slots will get filled by 9.30 am.

The entry is restricted between 9.30 am to 3 pm.

Berijam Lake Travel Tips :

You need official permission to enter the forest area, which your local travel agent should be able to arrange for you easily if you tell him before 2 PM the day before.

Tips : Beware of Monkeys at the lake as they tend to snatch food and bags. If you're coming in a group keep a list of visitors ready. The fog starts to cover the lake after 1:00 PM, so make sure that you reach early in the morning.

Visitor's Facility : Berijam Lake provides a number of facilities for visitors starting from a jeep safari, birdwatching points and tours to the dam site. You can soak in the pleasures of the scenic natural environment.

How to Reach  Berijam Lake :  The distance between Berijam Lake and Kodaikanal bus stand is about 22 km. If you are travelling to Kodaikanal by bus, you can take an autorickshaw and reach the famous Berijam Lake through road. 

The closest railway station is Kodaikanal Road Railway Station at the distance of 10 km from the lake and taxis are catered there to arrive at the lake. 

Nearest Airport : Madurai ,You can get several taxis and auto rikshaws from the Airport to reach the Berijam lake. 

Parking Facility : Only 20 vehicles are allowed at a time, the rest of the vehicles can park near the main road. You need to reach before 8:30 AM to get parking facility,Parking Fee - Rs. 200 for the vehicle.For Tamil Nadu registration vehicles. permission can be taken from the forest office at Moonjikal Junction from 8.30 am onwards.
