Vellingiri Hill Temple also known as Velliangiri Andavar Temple is located
in Poondi village situated some 40 km
away from the city Of Coimbatore Tamil Nadu .
Vellingiri Hills also Known as the
"Sapthagiri, 7 Hills Seven Mountains" Vellingiri Hills is well
connected Hills the part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which is situated on the
Western Ghats border of Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.
Vellingiri Hill temple is located atop the Vellingiri Hill is at 8127 Feet
above the sea level . The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva worshiped as
Swayambu. Velliangiri Temple cave is about 6 feet wide and here Lord Shiva
graces their devotees as Pancha (Five) Lingas.
Two rocks on either side of the temple appear as Dwarapalakas-securities.
This ancient temple is believed to be constructed by the King of Chola Dynasty,
Kopperunjingan, The Temple is believed to be 1000-2000 years old.
Vellingiri Hill temple is called as Kailash mountain on earth. There are
three Kailash are there as one in North Uttar Kailash, one in the Middle Madhya
Kailash and the third in the South Dakshina Kailash.
Where Uttar Kailash is in stumble form, Madhya Kailash is in Tibet and the
velliangiri hill is the Dakshina Kailash referred as “Then Kailayam or South
Kailash”.
The second Kailash or Madhya Kailai
is being in the Himalayas. Because of this reason, many south Indian devotees
couldn't reach 2nd Kailash also. The third Kailash is Velliangiri hills .
Devotees believing that The Shiva darshan in this temple is equal to Shiva
darshan in the Himalayas. Velliangiri hill is associated with stories of
Ramayana & Mahabharata. It is said that Mother Sita performed penance on
Lord Shiva at the 5th Velliangiri hill.
According to our ancient Puranas, Velliangiri is the venue where Lord Shiva
has appeared as a hunter before Arjuna, fought with him as a play and granted
him the Pasupatha weapon.
It is believed that Lord Shiva could not come on time to marry Goddess
Parvathi because of the trick played by the people of the mountains. So,
Parvati was angry and stood as it is and now she is known as Kanyakumari. Lord
Shiva can be seen on the top of the hill.
Trekking To Villingiri Hills : Poondi
Is A Small Village Situated In The Foothills Of Velliangiri Filled With
Vibrations Of Five Elements-Water, Fire, Wind, Earth, And The Sky As Lord
Panchalingesha Resides .
Devotees Used To Carry Food, Water And Articles While Climbing The Hill.
Suitable for all. However, local officials at the trail entrance will only
allow .
Devotees are allowed to trek from Maha Shivaratri Which usually falls during Feb last to March
first week to May 31st. It will be auspicious to trek on “Chitra Pournami"
.
Allowed to trek day and night during the season. After the season, Devotees
are allowed to trek during day time only on “No moon day” Amavasai.
From 2018 on wards women over the age of 50 years and girls below 10
years age group are allowed to trek. (Women
in their menstrual age are not permitted). It is not advisable to trek form
June 1st since, in Coimbatore district the rainy season will be started.
Velliangiri Hills Symbolizes Seven Chakkaras In Human
Body :
The first six Velliangiri hills are said to be the “Six Chakras” in the
human body viz Mooladara, Swadishtana, Manipooraka, Anakatha, Vishuddhi, and
Agnga. The seventh hill Sahasrara is the abode of Lord Shiva and It is
otherwise called Shiva Jyothi Dance Hill.
Velliangiri in the western boundary is considered to be the most famous.
Known as Rajathagiri, Velliangiri, Dakshin Kailash or Bhoolok Kailash, this
sacred spot, according to legend, is where Shiva performed his cosmic dance on
the request of his consort Umadevi.
The santamarutham, 8 kodumudigal (parts) fell from kailasam into 8
different places which are Thirugonamalai (Trincomalee), Thirukalahasti,
Thiruchiramalai, Thiruenkoimalai, Velliangiri Mountains at Rajathagiri,
Neerthagiri, Ratnagiri, and Swethagiri or Thirupangeeli.

First Hill :
Mooladhara The Shrine Of Velli Vinayagar
There were uniform steps throughout the path located on the first hill. The
height of the stairs is 3/4 foot to 1 foot, The bamboo tree forest on both
sides the pleasant atmosphere of traveling between the soft sound of birds and beetles wafting.
The aroma of the herbaceous plants, the aroma of the flowers, and the
breath of the pure air bring health to the body. Only the first of the seven
mountains is high. About 1 1/2 km. you will be reach Velli Vinayagar at the
beginning of the second hill .
Second Hill :
Swadhistanam Pambatti Sunai
Second hill has plains and steps in a few places. in 20 mins of climbing, you will come to
"Vazhukku Paarai" or slippery rock after a long time in the thick
forest steps have been cut in the rock for safety .
At the end of Vazhukku Paarai, you will see a small stream This spot is
near the Paambatti Siddhar Guhai, a cave where this Yogi is said to have been
in meditation for a long time.
There will be a small bamboo shaft stuck into the stream to make it easier
to fill water up your bottles. The climb will continue at moderate steepness
till you reach Kai Thatti Sonai where there is another water source hidden in a
little cave.
Make sure to hydrate yourself
because there will be no more water sources till the 6th hill.
Third Hill : Mani poorakam Kaithatti Chunai
The third hill starts this is called as the Clapping Swamp (Kaithati
Sunai). it is believed that the Siddhas are nomadic in the areas where this
swamp is located, there is a belief that the water will come from the crevices
of the rocks if we stand here and clap our hands and hence the name clapping
swamp.
Fourth Hill : Anahatham Sidhar Ottar's Samadhi
The fourth hill starts place where a kind of gourd grass has grown densely
it can be known as the beginning of the fourth mountain. The fourth hill is flat t his hill is easy to walk and hence
serves as an opportunity for the devotees to relax themselves.
It is on this fourth hill that the Siddhar Samadhi called Otter Samadhi is
located. Hence, the name Otter Samadhi is a well-known name among the devotees
of Velliangiri. This mountain is also known as Thiruneeru Malai.
Fifth Hill : Vishudhi Bheeman Kali Yurundai Hill
The fifth hill is named as Beeman Kali Urundai Hill. It is believed that
the Pancha Pandavas stayed at Tarapuram and came to the Velliangiri Hills at
that time.
Therefore, there are places like Beeman Kali Urundai Hill and the Arjunan
Head Rock which is considered to be the place where Arjunan performed penance.
The hill is rich in redwoods and flowering plants. On the north side of the
path is a dense forest called as the Sita forest. The area is mostly plain-like
without much fluctuations.
The fifth and sixth mountains are full of ups and downs, close to each
other. Between these two hills is the Sethilai Cave. While traveling here we
can feel the wind blowing at high speeds with extreme cold even in summer.

Sixth Hill : Aagna Sethizhai Cave ,Aandi Sunai
sixth hill descend towards the bottom. There is a swamp called as Aandi
Sunai. Devotees say that bathing here is an unforgettable and most memorable
experience.
The Fifth and Sixth Mountains have white sand and hence, they are also
known as Thiruneeru Malai. It is the custom of the devotees to take the white
sand from this Thiruneeru hill to their homes.
Seventh Hill : Sahasraaram Swayambu Lingam The land Of Velliangiri
The seventh hill called Swami hill there are three great rocks difficult
and challenging as climbing the first hill On this hill which together are a
feast for the eyes with a rare view that is naturally situated.
This is called the Thorana Entrance. Beyond this gate is the Lord Ganesha
shrine. Next to this is the small cave, where the Goddess Sanctuary is located.
Next to this, the Lord Velliangiri Temple is located in a cave located under a
large rock. The Lord of the Velliangiri Hills is a naturally raised self made Linga.
The sun rise view will be awesome from the 7th hill top where Lord Shiva’s
cave exists. Night and watch the Sun rise
from top of the Hill. The Sun rays used to fall on the Natural lingas (
3 Lingas).
