Siruvani Waterfalls located in siruvani hills at the distance of 36 km from coimbatore and 51 km from Palakkad.The siruvani dam was built by the Kerala government for Tamil Nadu, funded by the Tamil Nadu government, to meet the drinking water requirements of Coimbatore.

 

Siruvani Water falls :

 

Siruvani River is a river near Coimbatore. It is tributary of Bhavani river,which in turn is a tributary of Kaveri.The river leads into two big tourist attractions in Southern India, namely, the Siruvani Dam and the Siruvani Waterfalls. The dam is also near The Banan Fort.

 

Siruvani Waterfalls, visitors must take a 4 km trek through the forest, which is a great opportunity to spot wildlife and enjoy the area's natural beauty. The tour is moderately difficult and takes about 1-2 hours to complete.

Visitors can also opt for a jeep safari, which takes them through the forest to the waterfall. There is a small park near the waterfall, where visitors can relax and enjoy the beautiful views of the waterfall and the surrounding forest. There are also several viewpoints from where visitors can get a panoramic view of the waterfall.

 

One of the unique features of Siruvani Waterfalls is the water quality. The water in the Siruvani River is known for its purity and mineral content, making it one of the few sources of drinking water in the region.

 

The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) has set up a water treatment plant near the waterfall to supply pure drinking water to nearby cities and towns.

 

Sadivayal Checkpost, where an entry fee Rs. 50 is charged, at the gateway to the waterfalls. Private vehicles are not allowed after this point, however vehicles arranged by forest department can be used for the conveyance to the point where trek is to be started.

 

From here, a 1 km trek among the forest will lead you to the bathing area. This waterfalls is also known as Kovai Kutralam Falls. Siruvani Dam is very close to this falls. The water of the falls is famous for minerals and sweetness.

 

There are mainly three different points to try in this waterfall. The first one is at the ground level, which is a smalll pond formedby the water running down the falls. The second point is bit higher., which provides a place to stand under the gushing cold water.

 

The third point point is more dangerous, which is a small deep hole between the rocks near to the pond.  Many a times, visitors have spotted elephants walking through the surrounding areas, which is why forest guards keep patrolling inside these forests for visitor’s protection.

 

The walk you take towards the waterfall can be very long, but many different places offer beautiful landscapes for clicking perfect pictures with your friends and family.Also, a tower on the way to the falls offers a spectacular view of the surrounding greenery and narrow waterfalls streams.

Due to the depth of the place, only adults should try this place. Also, after completing the renaissance bath in this water, . One must have a permit from the forest department to visit this waterfall.

 

Siruvani dam History  : Siruvani dam constructed across the Siruvani River, The government gave approval for the construction of the masonry gravity dam in February 1915. Work did not start immediately, according to information from the Archaeology Department, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, and the district gazette.

 

Initially, the villagers of Boluvampatti and Alandurai opposed the scheme, as they feared it would affect their way of life. However, the benefits of additional water to the growing villages outweighed their initial apprehension.

 

The construction of the dam began in 1927.The site is located in rugged terrain, with hazards including wild animals. Construction workers stayed in the guest house near Iruttu pallam. Forest guards continue to accompany those who visit the dam.

 

The dam is 49.53 feet high and 878.5 meters above sea level with a water capacity of 650 million cubic feet. The water of Siruvani Reservoir is famous for its sweetness. Surrounded by Muthikulam Hill, the scenic beauty of Siruvani is simply enchanting.

 

Pattiyar Bungalow, one of the most beautiful Inspection Bungalows of the Kerala Forest Department is situated on the banks of this reservoir. The initial cost of construction was Rs. 2,17,725 . The reason for selecting the site was that it had perennial streams.

 

The areas below the Siruvani, Muthikulam Falls, Gobiyaru, Solaiyaru, Pattiyaru, Veeraru, and Paambaru Falls, the primary sources of supply, were identified for construction. There were plans to commission a hydroelectric project at Siruvani,

But the move was dropped as the Pykara project in the Nilgiris was mooted at the time. Major and minor construction works continued until 1984, and the total cost was Rs. 26.12 crores. The drawn from the dam in 1931 was 113 lakh litres for a population of more than 95,000.

 

In the 1970s, the drawn was scaled down to 130 lakh litres from 186 lakh litres in the summer as inflow into the Muthikulam reduced by half. At the Siruvani Dam,The gateways on either side of the road across the dam showcase typical Kerala and Tamil architectural styles.

 

Siruvani is also home to certain tribes like the Mudugars and Irulas. The falls and the dam attract tourists for their beautiful views.

 

Siruvani Waterfalls & Dam Coimbatore Timings : 8 AM - 5 PM

The visitors are not allowed to see the falls after 5 pm as it is located in the center part of a dense forest.

 

Siruvani Waterfalls & Dam Coimbatore Entry Cost  : Rs.50 ( Entrance forrest office opened to issue ticket from 9.30am onwards and the van trip from here is stopped at 3pm. )

 

Best Time to Visit Siruvani Waterfalls & Dam Coimbatore :  The months from July to September, during which this area receives good amount of rainfall, and increases the water level of these waterfalls considerably.
