Sulakkal is 12 Kms from Pollachi and 3 Kms from Kovilpalayam on the Coimbtore
Pollachi Road , Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu state, India.
Sulakkal Mariamman Temple is over 400
years old. This is one of the most important Mariamman temples in
Kongunadu. There is a Sulam ( trident ) near the Swayambumurthy due to which,
this place came to be held Sulakkal.
Ambal is a Swayambu Murthy there is a
scar on the Murthy caused by the hoof of a cow. As per Sthala Puranam, the cows
of nearby village called Velayudham palayam used to graze in this area.
The villagers observed that the yield
from the cows was progressively coming down as the cows were emptying their
udders at a particular spot.
The owner of a particular cow, which
was not giving milk followed it and found his cow shedding milk on a sandhill.
On seeing this the cow started galloping.
At that moment it's legs were hit by
the sandhill. As a shock surprise he saw the blood oozing out of the sandhill.
He dreamed about the godess same night and was dictated to raise a temple in
the name of the godess (Sulakkal Mariamman).
Sulakkal Mariamman is also called
Vadukku Vayil Selvi as She faces North . This name is very common in Tamilnadu
and in several places, instead of Selvi, She is called Chelli.
She is having four hands, holding
Udukkai and sword in the right hands and trident and skull in the left
hands. She is sitting with the right leg
folded. Though there is a separate Utsava Murthy, all the
abhishekams are done only to the Moola Vigraham.
The most important festival is the
Chithirai festival in the Tamil month of Chithirai with the crowning moment on
the day of Car Festival on the last Tuesday ( May ).
Puravipalayam Zameen members were
gifted chariot to Mariamman temple. For this festival, water is taken from this
temple and taken to the nearby temples for abhishekam and after this is over,
the festival commences.
This practice is in vogue for the past
200 years. Navarathri, Aadipperukku, Tamil New Year, Karthigai Deepam, Margali
Pooja and Aruthira Darisanam are the other noted festivals celebrated here.
