Jalagandeeswarar Temple Vellore , Yelagiri

 

Yelagiri formally Known as Vellore Yelagiri (also spelled Elagiri at times) is a hill station in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, India, situated off the Vaniyambadi-Tirupattur road. Located at an altitude of 1,110.6 metres above Mean Sea Level and spread across 30 km, the Yelagiri village . 

Jalagandeeswarar, meaning ‘Shiva dwelling in the waters’ in Tamil.Jalagandeeswarar Temple is located within the Vellore Fort in Tamil Nadu. 

It serves as a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, also known as Lord Jalakandeswarar. The temple is a stunning illustration of the opulent Vijayanagaram style. 

Jalakandeswarar Temple was originally a famous anthill encircled by water gathered from rain. In response, worshipers erected a Shiva Lingam (a representation of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva) in this location. 

Chinna Bommi Nayaka,controller of the fort at the time, dreamed that Lord Shiva had instructed him to build a temple there. As a result, Chinna Bommi Nayaka proceeded to construct a temple in 1550 AD in accordance with the divine directives he had received. 

Jalakandeswarar Temple is a magnificent representation of grand Vijayanagaram Architecture. The temple features: intricate embellishments; life-like statues, sturdy pillars made of rock that have been fashioned into symbolic creatures such as dragons, lions and horses; a large porch (Mandapam); an enormous tower (gopuram). 

The sanctuary itself worked in center of a water tank called Agazhi in Tamil, and there is water encompass the sanctuary like a laurel. The periphery of the water tank is 8000 ft. The wedding corridor Kalyana Mantapam inside the sanctuary has a 2 confronted mold, that of a bull and an elephant. 

This model of architectural expertise also accommodates a well, known as the Ganga Gouri Theertham, from which water is extracted for the purpose of bathing the statues of supreme beings (Abhishekam). 

Besides, one may also observe detailed sculptures dedicated to other Hindu deities such as Lord Vishnu, Goddess Mahalakshmi, Goddess Parvati, Lord Brahma, and Goddess Saraswathi. 

The Jalakandeswarar temple is currently managed and conserved by Archaeological Survey of India under the guidance of the Government of India.
