Wenlock Downs is a vast expanse of grassy meadow located on the way to Pykara in Ooty, Lush green grass that stretches endlessly and it doesn't seem to end no matter how much you walk Finally when you find something different in the route it is in the form of another stretch of eucalyptus trees.
Wenlock Downs is a spectacular meadow named after Sir Arthur Lawley's sibling Beilby Lawley, third Baron Wenlock. The downs spread majestically across 20,000 acres of rolling lands that seems to be stretching endlessly.
The entire place is covered with Shola forest. More popularly known as the Shooting Point, Wenlock Downs has two popular movie filming points known as Sixth Mile and Ninth Mile named so because of they are located at 6 miles and 9 miles away from Ooty.
The extensive grassland of Wenlock Downs was once used as hunting ground by the British and Europeans. Today Wenlock Downs is now home to the Gymkhana Club of Ooty and also the Government Sheep Farm.
The 80 acres downs also accommodate the Hindustan Photo Films Company. All these do not take away even a little bit of the serenity and peace you get when you walk through the grass.
This place is a wonderful hangout for the golf enthusiasts. Wouldn't qualify as a 'must see' place, when you compare it with the natural beauty of other surrounding places, but this is a totally different type of terrain from the Ghats that you see in Ooty.
It certainly qualifies as an
experience of a lifetime for those who like to go on long peaceful walks and
contemplate about 'life' and the higher entities of nature. The sight of sheep
grazing and the endless stretches of grass are sure to give you a lift if you

Horse riding – Trained gentle horses are available near the entrance of 9th Mile Ooty location. Pay the charges, and a horse is available for you to carry you up to the top. Take it for a ride, enjoy the views and come back. It takes about 15-20 minutes, and the horse-trainer will be with you all the time.
