The Elk Murugan Temple is a Hindu
temple situated atop Elk Hill in Ooty. It is one of the revered temples in Ooty
and among the best places to visit in Ooty.
The Elk Hill Temple is dedicated
to Lord Murugan. The highlight of the place is a 40 feet tall statue of Lord
Murugan that stands tall outside the enclosures of the temple and attracts
pilgrims and devotees from far and wide.
As you reach here, an around
40-feet high statue of Lord Murugan (Kartikeya), the presiding deity of the
shrine, catches your eye.
If not for its magnificence, then
it might catch your fancy owing to its similarity to the statue is a replica of
the Murugan Statue in Batu caves, Malaysia.
In addition to that, the temple
premises also have idols of Lord Ganesh, Lord Shiva, Goddess Shakthi, Nava
Kanika, Navagrahas, etc.

Festival at the Elk Murugan Temple :
Thaipusam is the main festival
celebrated at the temple to honour Lord Murugan. It is held in the Tamil month
of Thai (which falls somewhere in between late January and early February),
The devotees and the pilgrims
follow the procession with large containers containing milk as an offering.
Some devotees also carry a carrier decorated with flowers and peacock feathers,
called 'kavadi' on their back which also has milk offerings.
Devotees perform Kavadi Attam
which is a special form of dance. This dance performance is the main highlight
of the festival. People from all over the country visit the temple to attend
this festival.
