Sri Arulmigu Munthi Vinayagar Temple Or Puliakulam
vinayagar temple is located in Puliakulam at a distance of 3 km from
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India . This temple is dedicated to the god Munthi
Vinayagar, a form of Ganesha.
The temple holds the largest Vinayagar idol in the entire Asian Continent. The Vinayagar
statue was made out of a huge granite rock at Uthukuli. The idol of the Lord
stands about 20 feet tall and is over 11 feet broad sculpted from a single
massive rock by 21 highly skilled sculptors.
The idol is seen sitting on the lotus flower with a pot
of nectar which he is having through its trunk. The statue is 20 feet high and
weighs about 190 tonnes. The present temple was opened in 1982 by the Devendra
Kula Trust.
The idol is sculpted by 21 skilled Sculptors took 6 years to complete the idol.
The idol has 4 hands, one hand holds a piece of Mahabharata writings, the other
holds the Angus, one holding jack fruit, and in the other lotus flower.
The idol here is known as Vighnaharta and is believed as
visiting this temple will relieve the sufferings and the pains. Lord Ganesh is treated as the first god to
offer Pooja for auspicious day or functions, people offer lots of flowers and
coconuts to the Lord.
Major Festivals at Puliakulam Sri Mundhi Vinayaka
Temple Coimbatore :
Vinayaka Chaturthi : This
festival marks the birth of Lord Ganesha and is celebrated between August and
September. On this auspicious day, devotees flock to the temple in large
numbers to offer their prayers to Lord Ganesha.
The idol is decorated with flower garlands, princely
attire and ornaments which are also called 'Raja Alankaram'. A ritual abhisheka
is also performed early in the morning in the temple.
Tamil New Year : Celebrated on 14th of April every year, the festival is
called Chithirai Kani in regional language. Devotees visit the temple to offer
prayers, donate fruits and vegetables and offer alankaram to the deity.
The food items donated at the temple are used for
preparing Prasada after the Tamil New Year Rituals and distributed to the
devotees.
Sankatahara Chaturthi : It is
celebrated every fortnight according to the Hindu calendar. Fasting and
offering prayers to Lord Ganesha is believed to be very auspicious on this day.
Navarathri : Navarathri is also grandly celebrated. The beauty of
Alankara would be that beautiful in a such a way two eyes wouldn’t be enough.
It is a 10-day festival celebrated in the month of during the months of September – October .
