Kodiveri dam
was was built over the Bhavani River It was constructed by Kongalvan a
chieftain under the rule of Chola king Kulottunga I in the year 1125 AD. The
dam was constructed in the 17th century by Maharaja of Mysore using elephants
and prisoners.
It was carved
out of a 20-foot wall of rock and the stones inter locked with iron bars with
lead as mortar. The sound wall was built 20 feet wide as the main wall to
withstand the heavy water load.
Water
release controllers allow water to flow freely without harming the surrounding
areas. Thick iron rods and lead were used in construction to provide long-term
support. The Dam has been a major source of irrigation it irrigates over 25,000
hectars of lands in the area.
Two channels arise from the Dam ; The entrance to the Kodiveri falls is available on both sides of the
Bhavani river one is on the north side of the Bhavani river and the other on
the south side is the “Arakkan Kottai Channel” and the “Tadapalli Channel”.
The lands
north of Gobichettipalayam are fertile due to the flow of the Tadapalli
channel. Sugarcane and paddy cultivation are high in this region. The lush
green fields are also a delight to watch.

waterfalls at the bottom of the Kodiveri Dam are a spectacular place with
