Government Silk Farm | Silk Farm, Yelagiri
Yelagiri formally Known as Vellore Yelagiri
(also spelled Elagiri at times) is a hill station in Vellore district of Tamil
Nadu, India, situated off the Vaniyambadi-Tirupattur road. Located at an
altitude of 1,110.6 metres above Mean Sea Level and spread across 30 km, the
Yelagiri village .
Government Silk Farm is located at
Mangalam Village,Silk Farm is home to silk worms and it is owned by Tamilnadu
Government.
Silk farm is famous for its mulberry
plantations form an indispensable part of the sericulture as it is on these
plants that the silk worms survive.
The silkworms are kept in a specific
room where they are hatched after 10 days and then they are transferred to the
trays where they eat their mulberry leaves for them to eat.
The mulberry trees form a major part
of the farm they are kept at every stage of growth so that there are fresh new
leaves available and ready to be picked when needed. Its a long interesting
walk along mulberry plantations.
The visitors can also see the whole
process along with the silk farm from a closer view.
