Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary|Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park
Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1976, In 1989 three areas totalling 108 sq. kms. were demarcated and its status upgraded to that of a National Park.
Later, it was renamed as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary & National Park in honor of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's visit in 1961. National Tiger Conservation Authority, the sanctuary has declared as Anamalai Tiger Reserve in 2007.
The sanctuary presently includes a core area of 958.59 sq. km and a buffer area of 521.28 sq.km forming a total area of 1479.87 sq. km. It is located an altitude of 1400 m at Anamalai Hills of Western Ghats. Anamalai Tiger Reserve is the perfect place to see tigers.
This National Park serves as a crucial watershed for the agricultural economy and power supply in several regions of Tamil Nadu.Anamalai wildlife sanctuary has various kinds of wild animals like panthers, elephants, deer, gaur, civets, tigers, sloth bears, wild bears, wild dogs, porcupines, flying squirrels, jackals, and pangolins.
The park is home to birds like the red treepie, whiskered bulbul, spotted dove, rocket-tailed drongo, black-headed oriole, and pigeon.The sanctuary houses about 250 kinds of rare birds that are kept in a very secure and protected habitat.
The main tourist facilities are located in the northeast
corner of the park at "Topslip", so named because of the local 19th
century practice of sliding timber logs down the hills from here Elephant
Safari and Van services are available at the Top Slip as it is the gateway for
a wonderful wildlife experience of the Wildlife Sanctuary.
Anamalai Tiger Reserve has been identified as a world
heritage siteby the UNESCO.The Sanctuary and the Park are under consideration
by UNESCO as a part of the World Heritage site of the Western Ghats.
