Swamimalai Hills Trek Yelagiri
Yelagiri formally Known as Vellore Yelagiri (also spelled Elagiri at times)
is a hill station in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, India, situated off the
Vaniyambadi-Tirupattur road. Located at an altitude of 1,110.6 metres above
Mean Sea Level and spread across 30 km, the Yelagiri village .
Swamimalai Hill Trek in Yelagiri it is the highest point in Yelagiri At a
distance 6.5 km from Punganoor Lake and 7 km from Athanavur Bus Stop.The
Yelagiri hill is in the shape of a cake
with a strong base at the bottom and peak touching the sky.
Swamimalai hill is a favorite trekking and mountain climbing spot. It is a
perfect place for those who love to enjoy the pleasure of trekking.The entire
trek can be divided into two sections.
The starting point from the temple to the Forest office.Forest office to
the summit of the hill.
Swamimalai Hill starts from Mangalam village (3.5 kms from Punganoor
Lake) in Yelagiri. There is a Mariamman
temple at the centre of the village which is a major landmark as it is the starting
point of the trek.
And the other way is Athanavur Bus Stop
which is 4 km from Swamimalai .
Local people can guide visitors to the hill through dense forest.Normally
it takes about 2 - 2.5 hrs to go up and come down. Swamimalai hill offers a breath
taking view can see the complete valley below you as well as the villages of
Yelagiri.
The path to the top is well cut, so it’s hard to get lost so long as you
follow the route. There are no directions once you leave the village, so just
take the obvious path.
At some places, one can find stone steps and at others, tree roots serve as
footholds.one can expect to pass through forested areas and small streams – a
delight for the senses.
You enter a different world after you cross the man-made steps. The trail
suddenly becomes narrow. You see colourful butterflies welcoming you and light
pink coloured shy plant flowers all around leave you speechless.
On reaching the top of the hill trekkers can find a Shiva temple.There is a huge rock next to the
temple. It is believed that there was a Trishul on the top of this rock earlier
priest who took care of the temple used to climb the rock and offer his
prayers.
But the Trishul was stolen later making the rock just a viewpoint. Swamimalai
Hill villagers visit the temple regularly and offer their prayers. People from
the surrounding villages also visit the Shiva temple on the top to pay homage.
On the rock's side, an iron ladder was erected. Visitors can climb up the
ladder to get a great view of the hills.The ladder does not have any support so
be careful while climbing up.
The view from the top of the rock is spectacular. Sit on the rock for some time and enjoy the lush green valley in front of you. You can see the mountain ranges all the way up to the horizon.You get one of the best sunset views.
